چکیده

We present the results of narrow-band and broad-band imaging with the Very Large Telescope ⋆ of the field surrounding the radio galaxy TN J0924–2201 at z = 5.2. Fourteen candidate Lyα emitters with a rest-frame equivalent width of > 20 Å were detected. Spectroscopy of 8 of these objects showed that 6 have redshifts similar to that of the radio galaxy. The density of emitters at the redshift of the radio galaxy is estimated to be a factor 1.5–6.2 higher than in the field, and comparable to the density of Lyα emitters in radio galaxy protoclusters at z = 4.1, 3.1 and 2.2. The Lyα emitters near TN J0924–2201 could therefore be part of a structure that will evolve into a massive cluster. These observations confirm that substantial clustering of Lyα emitters occurs at z > 5 and support the idea that radio galaxies pinpoint high density regions in the early Universe.

A Group of Red , Ly Emitting , High Redshift Galaxies 1

We have discovered two new high redshift (z = 2:38) galaxies, near the previously known z = 2:38 galaxy 2139?4434 B1 (Francis et al. 1996). All three galaxies are strong Ly emitters, and have much redder continuum colors (I ? K 5) than other optically-selected high redshift galaxies. We hypothesize that these three galaxies are QSO IIs; radio-quiet counterparts of high redshift radio galaxies, ...

We have carried out narrow band imaging targeted at the Lyα line of emitters associated with radio galaxies at 2 < z < 5. Subsequent spectroscopy has confirmed the identity of > 120 Lyα emitters and led to the discovery of six proto-clusters up to z = 4.1 with velocity dispersions between 300 and 1000 km s. The number of emission line galaxies in the observed fields is four to fifteen times hig...

Lyman Break Galaxies , Ly Α Emitters and a Radio Galaxy in a Protocluster

We present deep HST/ACS observations in g475r625i775z850 towards the z = 4.1 radio galaxy TN J1338–1942 and its overdensity of >30 spectroscopically confirmed Lyα emitters (LAEs). We select 66 g475-band dropouts to z850,5σ = 27, 6 of which are also a LAE. Although our color-color selection results in a relatively broad redshift range centered on z = 4.1, the field of TN J1338–1942 is richer tha...

The Highest Redshift Radio Galaxy Known in the Southern Hemisphere

We present the discovery of a z = 4.13 galaxy TN J1338-1942, the most distant radio galaxy in the southern hemisphere known to date. The source was selected from a sample of Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS; α < −1.3; S ∝ ν) radio sources using the Texas and NVSS catalogs. The discovery spectrum, obtained with the ESO 3.6m telescope, shows bright extended Ly-α emission. The radio source has a very asy...

Large Area Lyman Alpha survey : finding young galaxies at z = 4 . 5

Strong Lyman-α emission is a signpost of young stars and the absence of dust and thus indicates young galaxies. To find such a population of young galaxies at z=4.5 we started the Large Area Lyman Alpha survey (LALA). This survey achieves an unprecedented combination of volume and sensitivity by using narrow-band filters on a large format (36 ×36) camera on the 4 meter telescope at KPNO. The vo...
